Thinking about playing a new Instrument?

I have been pondering about playing a new instrument. I already play the saxophone and drum set, so reading music is not a issue. I would like to play the Cello. I know this will not be a easy instrument to learn to play but I am determined to learn. I would like some tips to help me get started. What would be a decent cello to start off with? Yes money is a factor, under $500. I don't expect it to sound like the best thing in the world, but I know there is ways to make it sound better like new strings ext ext. What books should I purchase to get started?
