My batteries turned to white chemicals in my musical keyboard?

I have a Casio CTK-650. I openned the back to replace the batteries but found a lot of white stuff in it with the batteries. Is it safe to clean out it and put new batteries in, or do I have to invest in a whole new synthesizer? I am very upset. I wanted to compose a new song on it.
